How to Improve Your HRV on Whoop and Oura

Whoop and Oura both estimate HRV from an optical (PPG) sensor at the wrist, usually overnight while you're still, convenient, and reasonably consistent for tracking your own trend, though not identical to a clinical ECG reading. Independent validation work has reported concordance as high as 0.99 for Oura and 0.94 for Whoop against ECG in some studies, which is strong for a consumer wearable. What moves the actual number is the same regardless of which one you wear.

What Whoop's HRV feeds into

Whoop uses your overnight HRV as a major input to its Recovery score, alongside resting heart rate and sleep. A lower HRV night usually drags Recovery down with it, which is why the fixes below move both numbers together.

What Oura's HRV feeds into

Oura reports overnight HRV directly and also folds it into your Readiness score. Oura additionally shows an HRV graph across the night, which is worth checking, since a sharp drop at a specific point (say, after a late meal or a stressful call) can point to a cause more specifically than the single morning average.

Common mistakes that quietly suppress your reading

A loose band or one worn on top of a tattoo or with poor skin contact adds noise to any optical sensor's reading. Alcohol and a late, heavy meal both suppress overnight HRV directly. Going to bed at a wildly different time than usual disrupts the sleep stages where HRV normally rises, even if total sleep hours look fine. None of these are device problems: they show up the same way on any wearable.

A simple daily routine to move your trend

Keep your sleep and wake times consistent, save alcohol for occasions rather than routine, and add a short paced-breathing session, ideally in the evening, since slow breathing directly stimulates the parasympathetic system your wearable is measuring. None of this requires replacing your Whoop or Oura, it's a habit layer on top of the number you're already watching.
