The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique, Explained
4-7-8 breathing is a simple relaxation pattern popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, adapted from older pranayama breathing practices. The whole method rests on one ratio: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8.
The pattern, step by step
- Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold that breath for 7 seconds.
- Exhale slowly and fully through your mouth for 8 seconds.
That's one cycle, lasting 19 seconds. Most people repeat it for a few minutes.
Why the exhale is the longest phase
A long, slow exhale is what most strongly activates your vagus nerve and parasympathetic ("rest and digest") response. Stretching the exhale well past the inhale is what separates 4-7-8 from ordinary breathing, and it's the main reason it can lower heart rate and support HRV within a few cycles.
A note on safety
The breath hold can feel unfamiliar at first. Go at your own pace, breathe normally if you feel light-headed, and avoid this exercise while driving or operating machinery.
