Why Is Your HRV Low?

A single low reading rarely means anything on its own: HRV swings naturally from day to day. It's worth investigating when the swing is unusually large, or when your trend stays low for several days in a row. Here are the most common causes, roughly in order of how often they explain it.

Sleep debt or fragmented sleep

This is the single biggest lever for most people. HRV rises during deep sleep; a short night, a late night, or sleep interrupted by noise, light, or a restless partner all blunt that rise. One rough night usually shows up the next morning; several in a row compound.

Overtraining or insufficient recovery

Hard exercise briefly lowers HRV while your body repairs, that's expected and not a problem by itself. It becomes one when hard sessions stack without enough easy days between them, and your trend stays suppressed instead of bouncing back within a day or two.

Getting sick, or fighting something off

Your immune response is itself a stress on the autonomic nervous system, so HRV often drops in the days before you notice symptoms, not just once you're visibly sick. A sudden, otherwise-unexplained dip is worth reading as "take it easier today," even if you feel fine.

Alcohol

Alcohol suppresses next-morning HRV reliably, even in amounts that don't feel like much the night before, because it disrupts both sleep architecture and autonomic balance overnight. If your HRV is consistently lower on the mornings after drinking, that pattern alone is informative.

Chronic stress

Ongoing stress, work or otherwise, keeps your sympathetic ("fight or flight") system engaged more of the time, which suppresses HRV in a way that a single good night of sleep won't fully reverse. This is the mechanism behind most of the current "nervous system regulation" content online: it's a real effect, even where the framing gets oversimplified.

When it's not improving despite doing "everything right"

HRV responds on the order of weeks, not days, so a short run of good habits may not move the trend yet, especially if your baseline noise is high. Keep the log going before concluding something isn't working. If your trend stays low for weeks despite good sleep, moderate training, and low stress, that's worth mentioning to a clinician rather than troubleshooting further on your own.
